New Fire Chief/Administrator and New Deputy Chief head the department as of September

Former Deputy Chief Al Church took over as Fire Chief/Administrator of the Federal Way Fire Department effective September 1.
Former Battalion Chief Pat Kettenring became the new Deputy Chief on the same day.

Chief Church has been with Federal Way Fire Department since September of 1978. He progressed steadily through the ranks and was appointed Chief of Operations in October of 1994. He is a Certified Executive Fire Officer, having completed the four-year National Fire Academy program in 2000. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Workforce Education and Human Resource Development from Southern Illinois University, an Associate Degree in Arts & Sciences from Pierce College, and an Associate Degree in Fire Science from Tacoma Community College.

Deputy Chief Kettenring celebrated 20 years with the department in January, 2001. He was promoted to Battalion Chief in 1996 and served at that rank as C Shift Chief, Chief of Special Operations, Chief of Training, and Fire Marshal. He was named Officer of the Year in both 1991 and 2000. Chief Kettenring has an Associate of Arts degree in Fire Command and an Associate of Arts in Fire Investigation from Bellevue Community College. He is completing his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at City University.
